JUST International Development

Disentangling, deepening and proposing new pathways for just international development

Due to problems we are experiencing with this website, we have moved to JustID-Conference.net (as of 27 Feb. 2023)

The Just International Development Forum is an interactive and co-creative encounter (around 80 participants) in the heart of Amsterdam (Volkshotel, Wibautstraat 150, 1091 GR Amsterdam), from the 8th of March 2023 at 12:00 (CET) to the 10th of March 2023 at 14:00 (CET).

Development interventions and processes have always been deeply entwined with questions of justice. Critical social scientists have long confronted the unjust implications of an international development agenda that seeks to impose external values, technologies, and modes of governance and the consequent (re)production of inequalities and vulnerabilities.

Echoed by activists leading the social and environmental justice charge on the ground, such critical voices sustain that to be just, development projects must be better attuned to contextual specificities, including asymmetrical power relations and persistent knowledge hierarchies. More recent contributions expand such considerations to question the notion of development altogether, and to interrogate the means and meanings of justice also in high-income regions and trace how injustice operates and travels across diverse geographical contexts.

Program and Registration

We have opted for a predominantly in-person format, complemented with a dynamic website. Selected sessions will be recorded and/or live streamed. Through blogs, chats etc. on the website, we will collect input from colleagues and friends who are not able to join us in Amsterdam and bring their ideas to our discussion during the forum.

The Forum features a range of activities, including plenary discussions, a world café, sessions in different format on key themes in international development studies, research pitches in a bar, a film screening and ample time for conversations over drinks and bites. We endeavour to continue our conversation after the forum via our Just International Development website.

Special call for students and researchers to present a 'research pitch'

Students and researchers at all levels are invited to participate in a 'research pitch' session. Please see here for more details, and submit your interest to participate with your name and the title of your pitch to justid2023@uva.nl by 24 February 2023, 17.00 pm CET.
